Create a Hopeful Future
Hopelessness is at a all time high in America.
According to a Gallup study, almost half of Americans, 48%, are feeling down, depressed, or hopeless, and for good reason!
In 2020 (and even today), we've had civil unrest, a health crisis, businesses have closed, and jobs have been lost.
In this podcast, we're reviewing the power of hope, the 3 components which make up hope (according to Charles R. Snyder, psychologist, pioneer of hope research), and we're providing you with 5 Leadership Paradigms that will help you to create a hopeful future for yourself.
If you believe these paradigms may not apply to you because you're not a Leader, I'm going to disagree and say you are Leader, and these WILL add value to you.
John Maxwell says, "Leadership is influence, nothing more nothing less."
Leadership is not about your position or your job title, it's about your ability to empower others.
That said, these paradigms are the 5 things you need to believe, the mindset you need to hold, in order for you to experience and reap the benefits of hope — success and well-being.

Per usual, I've got a burning question for you.

And my burning question is, when you think about the future, do you feel excited or apprehensive? Do you have feelings of hope or hopelessness? If you're feeling hopeless, let me tell you, you are one of many, my friends. Almost half of Americans 48% are feeling down, depressed or hopeless, and for good reason. This past year has been hard to say the least. We've had some civil unrest, we've been in a health crisis, businesses have closed, people have lost their jobs. And if you're feeling any or all of these, then you have tuned in to the right podcast today because we're going to talk about the power of hope and its benefits to your well being and your success, and we're going to provide you with five paradigms that will help you create a hopeful future for yourself. But before we do, what is hope? Well, most psychologists who have studied the feeling of hope, they favor the definition developed by the late Charles Snyder, a pioneer of hope, research, and a psychologist at the University of Kansas, his model of Hope has three components to it which include goals, agency and pathways. Now let's define these three components. Number one, goals, I'm sure you're familiar that goals are our ideas of the future or desired result. And it's paired with our commitment to achieve the result. For example, a goal could be your desire and commitment to level up from a director to a C suite position or the desire and commitment to quit your job and start your own business, or double or triple the size of your business. Number two, agency. This is the ability to shape our lives at the core, it's a belief that we can, and we have the power to make things happen, and we have the motivation to reach that desired outcome. For example, business, life for that matter, is full of brick walls a frustration. Agency is to believe in your ability to figure out how to get around the brick walls and achieve your success. Number three pathways. Now pathways are the how we get to our goal, or the routes in the plan that allow us to achieve the goal, for example, they're the play by play that you map out to quit your job and start your own business, or the plans that you've developed to pivot your business and ensure it not only survives through the pandemic, but it thrives thereafter. Now, what's important about Charles Snyder's hope mile is the order of the components. A lot of people work through these components out of order or are missing one of the three, which means they never truly get to experience and reap the benefits of hope, for example, perfectionist. They may have the goals ,so step one, they have a desired outcome, But then they jump to step three, they go straight to pathways which is the how to achieve their outcome. There is a thought that if I figure out how to be perfect, and make a perfect pathway or roadmap to my desired outcome, it is then that I will have hope that it'll all work out. Alternatively, there was a fear that if they put something out which isn't perfect and it doesn't work out, then hope will be lost. But that's not how Hope Works, hope is not dependent on the outcome. Hope is what you turn to when the outcome is uncertain, and to have hope is to hold the belief first, before the how, or to have an agency before the pathway. Now hope is important to our lives because it creates excitement, motivation, and momentum for the future, affecting our overall well being. When you have hope, you're more likely to have goals or overcome barriers and quickly pivot to new goals, if something doesn't work out for you. You're more likely to focus on what's going well, which has you feeling good, energized, and how's you making better decisions for yourself.

In the workplace, hopeful employees are 69 times more likely to be engaged, 14% more productive, and they do one more day of work than a less hopeful person. Hope is one of the most powerful motivators in our lives, it's a core component of what it means to be human, and to feel alive. So how do we create hope? Well, one way is through a paradigm shift, and today I'm sharing five leadership paradigms that will help you create a hopeful future. And before you say, well what if I'm not a leader. My response to you is, you are a leader, you are a leader if you are a current leader, an aspiring leader or a person of influence, John Maxwell says leadership is influence, nothing more, nothing less. It's not about your position or your title, it's about your ability to empower others, and that is you, so give yourself some credit. Now before I get into these paradigms, I want to remind you that a paradigm is not an absolute fact. But it's the belief. And these paradigms are the five things you need to believe the mindset you need to hold in order for you to experience and reap the benefits of hope and experience success, and well being. And here they are--- paradigm one, I'm open to the possibilities, I cannot yet see. Now the best way for me to really explain what this paradigm is, is to share the story of a Chinese farmer, and it goes like this. Once upon a time there was a Chinese farmer who lost a horse. It ran away and all the neighbors came around that evening and said, That's too bad. And he said, maybe. The next day the horse came back and brought with it seven wild horses and all the neighbors came around and said, Wow, that's great, isn't it? He said, maybe. The next day, his son was attempting to tame one of these horses while writing it, and was thrown off and broke his leg, and all the neighbors came around in the evening, and said, Well that's too bad, isn't it? And the farmer said, maybe. The next day, the conscription officers came around looking for people, for the army, and we rejected his son because he had broken his leg. And the neighbors came around in the evening, and said, Isn't that wonderful, and he said, maybe. You know, this whole process of nature is an integrated process of immense complexity. And it's really impossible to tell whether anything that happens is either good or bad, because you never know what will be the consequence of the misfortune or what will be the consequence of the good fortune. Moving on to paradigm two, I choose faith over fear. Now Woody Allen said, if you want to make God laugh, tell him about your plans. The reality is, you can plan for every best and worst case scenario, and you still won't always know how things are going to turn out. Everything is uncertain, but even when it feels like you were powerless with no control, you always have power and control of what you think and you get to choose whether you walk in faith, or fear. Both require you to believe in something that you can't see the unknown. Which choice do you believe will benefit you?

Bernie Brown says, Faith is a place of mystery, where we can find the courage to believe in what we cannot see, and the strength to let go of a fear of uncertainty paradigm three. Nothing is impossible. Rather, I'm possible. This paradigm comes from a quote from Audrey Hepburn. Nothing is impossible. The word itself says, I'm possible. And this also reminds me of one of my favorite quotes by Henry Ford, who said, whether you think you can or you can't, you're right. At the end of the day your thoughts create your results. How so? Well your thoughts create your feelings and your feelings drive your actions or your in actions which create your results. As an example, if you believe anything is possible and you believe in your abilities to figure out how to achieve your goal, then your beliefs will drive your actions. You won't stop at the brick wall of frustration, you will keep thinking of new ways to figure out how to get around it, climb over it, bulldoze through it. When you're possible, everything becomes figure-outable. Paradigm four, all actions get results, and some results are failures. The goal here is to shift from judgment of failure to curiosity and amazement, making failures more valuable than our successes, because you learn more. Business success, or success in any area of your life, comes from trial and error, the more you fail the more you learn, which gives you more opportunities to develop your confidence. Paradigm five -- every moment, feeling, experience is perfectly orchestrated for my evolution. And this paradigm shifts you from a victim mindset to empowerment, it helps you embody that nothing in life is happening to you, rather, it's all happening for you. Making your greatest struggles, your greatest opportunities to transform your business yourself and elevate to new heights. I know this paradigm might be tough to digest, because we may not always like what we're going through or experiencing, but just consider this perspective, that no matter what you feel about an experience, life did something right to help you evolve. Some of us have experienced some terrible things that I can't even imagine. But when it happens to you, you're a victim. And when you're a victim, you're not empowered. But when you transition the perspective of it happening for you, You get the gift of opening it up into a new and different way of thinking about the experience. It doesn't take away from the fact that it might have been a very terrible, and maybe even traumatic experience, but similar to the first paradigm that we reviewed, you open yourself up to new possibilities, and you now have a choice of how you want to react or respond to what you're going through. Life's wisdoms come from the ups and sometimes even more powerfully from the downs. Alright, let's recap those five leadership paradigms that will help you create a more hopeful future. Number one, I'm open to the possibilities that I cannot yet see. Number two, I choose faith over fear. Number three, nothing is impossible, rather impossible. Number four, all actions get results and some results are failures. Number five, every moment, feeling and experience is perfectly orchestrated for my evolution. Patrick Overton said, when we walk to the edge of all the light that we have and take the step into the darkness of the unknown, We must believe that one of two things will happen----there will be something solid for us to stand on, or we'll be taught how to fly. Empowering, right? Now before I leave you, I want to give you some new and exciting information. I will be piloting my first mindset group coaching course in September which is coming very soon.
