Empowerhouse Coaching presents, Creative Mindsets for Business, a podcast where Entrepreneurs, Business Leaders, and their teams learn how to cultivate creativity together so they can accelerate growth, and scale to success.
My name is Amanda Escobedo, I’m your host, creative mindset master coach, and the founder of Empowerhouse Coaching.
If you’re joining me for the first time today, I want to give you a warm welcome. Thank you so much for being here. I’m confident that you’ll learn something, and I hope to provide you with a breakthrough or personal insight.
For those of you who have been following my work, welcome back.
Happy Memorial Weekend to everyone.
I hope you were able to relax and rejuvenate during your long weekend.
But I also hope you took a moment to reflect on and recognize our veterans, active US military personnels, and our fallen soldiers.
I personally went to LA’s fleet week in San Pedro and engaged in their different festivities, one of which included an active duty ship tour. Wow, that tour was eye opening. My mind never thinks about the amount of work training of personnels, intelligence, etc. to protect our freedom every single day. I’m super grateful for those which put themselves on the line everyday to serve this country and protect our nation.
In today’s episode, we’re going to be discussing How to create your own luck, and yes, YOU CAN CREATE IT!!
To support this topic, I’m going to review:
- The kind of luck we’re going for
- Key characteristics of a lucky person
- And I’m going to share 5 things you can start to do today to cultivate more luck in your life
That said, let’s dive right into our lucky topic!
So, what kind of luck are we going going for?
To answer this, I actually need to ask you a question…
What are some topics or activities that completely fascinate you?
When you do them, you find yourself so plugged in and nothing matters.
Even if you hit a brick wall during your engagement of that activity, you’re resilient, because you’re doing what you love,
And when you’re doing what you love, you’re excited to figure out how to overcome the challenge. It’s like a puzzle for you.
And when you’re doing this activity, it’s like time just stands still for you.
When you come up for air, maybe you thought 20 minutes passed by, but it had really been a few hours.
Maybe you feel like this when you’re gardening, drawing, writing, playing an instrument, doing sports, traveling, maybe you feel like this whenever you’re walking in nature
Whatever it is that you’re doing, that fascinates you, it feels like you can eat, sleep, drink this activity or topic.
For me, I feel like this when I’m doing my charcoal drawings or when I’m coaching.
When I’m coaching, I don’t actually need to be in a formal coaching session.
Sometimes, when I’m engaging with a stranger and we get into a conversation, I’m able to establish a level of comfort and trust fairly quickly which allows the other person to open up, and gaine a deeper understanding themselves a little more…
I’ve had multiple people share after engaging in a conversation with me for the first time that they felt like they were in a trans, lol, …and I kind of feel like that to, and i love it!
I also feel like this when I’m doing my charcoal drawings or portraits
The last drawing I did was RBG - Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
I hadn’t draw in years, but when she passed, I felt inspired.
When I put that piece of charcoal to paper, I was immediately in the zone.
And when I came up for air, I had sworn only 20 minutes had passed by but it had been 2 hours, at least!
Now, when were engaging in activities like these, when we’re doing what we love, it’s like all of a sudden we find ourselves coming across the right person, we find ourselves at the right event, in the right situation,
It's like we’re in a world of synchronicity, serendipity.
This is luck!
And this is the luck we’re going for.
We’re going for a state of flow,
And when we’re doing more of what we love, tapping into our creativity, we constantly find ourselves in the right place, at the right time... or we think about this idea, and then the next day we meet somebody that has the key to it.
And when it feels like we’re in alignment with the world, we’re coming across the right person, and we find ourselves at the right event, everything in life is working in our favor, people think, oh, what a coincidence, or oh wow, I’m so lucky right now! I’ve come across so much luck.
But I’m here to say it isn’t a coincidence. You actually created your own luck, and there’s a formula to creating a world of synchronicity, more luck for yourself.
According to scientists, luck exists.
A London-based psychologist, Dr. Richard Wiseman has spent decades studying the phenomenon.
In one experiment, Wiseman asked 400 people if they considered themselves lucky or unlucky. He then gave all 400 participants a newspaper and asked them to count the number of photographs in it.
On average, it took the unlucky group two minutes to count. The lucky group were finished within seconds. Why?
Because the lucky group found a note on the second page of the newspaper that read “stop counting.”
Wisemen says, in this example, the lucky group had certain characteristics associated with luck, while the other group did not:
- The lucky group was skilled at creating and noticing opportunities.
- The lucky group “listened to their intuition”
- The lucky group created self-fulfilling prophecies via positive thinking and attitudes
- And the lucky group had resilient attitudes that transformed bad luck into good luck.”
In the end, Wiseman says, people create their own good fortune by adopting these four key traits:
- Noticing or being aware to opportunities
- Listening to your intuition
- Positive thinking or attitudes
- And Resilience
If you don’t consider yourself lucky, Let’s talk about how you might be blocking your own luck and how to change it.
- #1 is the the 3 Rs
Most people’s lives encompass the 3 R's.
We do things because it’s a responsibility, it gives us a reward or we do something to get recognition.
For example, if we’re doing something that is a responsibility, that might be or sound like, “I have to pick up the kids from school”, “I have to cook dinner”, “I have to do laundry or pick up the dry cleaning”.
If you’re saying something like “I have to do x…”, It’s likely a responsibility.
If you’re doing something for a reward, that might be doing something to make you money like your job which you’re doing for a paycheck, or you’re working extra hard for that bonus….maybe you’re doing stock trading, or picking up a side hustle for some extra cash.
If you’re doing something for recognition, maybe you're grabbing flowers for your girl because you want to be recognized as a good boo, bf, husband, or maybe you’re making a donation to a charity so you can be recognized at the event as a donor or sponsor.
But think of kids for a second…children do things for the sake of it, right?
They build sandcastles, they dance around the living room to the beat of their own drum,
They’re finger painting like picasso, they talking to their imaginary friend.
There's no reward, there's no recognition, and there's no responsibility.
By now, you know that a bulk of the mindset tools I teach were created by Dr. Michael Ray, who was a researcher and professor at Stanford.
When Dr. Michael Ray created a profound program in mindfulness and emotional intelligence, he wanted to help his students discover their well of creativity and experience a deeply fulfilled lives, he looked at the most creative and joyous human being on the planet —kids.
Kids are full of joy and creativity.
Remember when you were a kid, always making up cool new games and ideas and stories? It was like we had so much imagination and curiosity and questioning.
The reason is….is because kids play, especially little ones, play for almost eight hours a day!
So guess what? To help get more into a state of flow, synchronicity with the world, in other words, create your own luck, it requires you to do more of what you love, and play!
Yes, do the 3 Rs, AND create space for play.
Because the more you do things just for the sake of doing, you open up your Pandora's box of creativity, puts you in a state of flow, and in synchronicity with the world.
So I invite you to dance around your living room wildly with the music blasting, go to the beach and make a sandcastle—just because.
I invite you to go to the art store and get some oil painting, just to paint just for the sake of it. When we're in the field of play; not for reward, recognition or responsibility, there is a portal that opens, and we download new ideas, we upload new brilliance, and next levels of creativity because we're not trying to be specific about anything. There's just no reason. So play is part of unlocking creativity, clarity, and your luck.
- Now, your second luck blocker are your expectations.
Expectations block your possibilities, your opportunities, your creativity, your luck!
How many people are out in the dating field super single and frustrated, trying to find their romantic partner, but their in the field with this list of unrealistic expectations like, he’s got to be over 6 ft tall, he has to make X amount of money, have X job title or higher, he’s got to own a house, etc.
On the other hand, how many happily married couples do you know, where their love story started off by saying he or she is not what I expected to marry. They came out of left field for me. They showed up in my life when I least expected.
Let’s relate this to business…how many of you Entrepreneurs, Small Business Owners, or Business Development Leader are out here, are jumping on calls super confident that you’re going to close a deal with a prospect, and then get super disappointed or take it personally when a prospect ghosts you, or says, “no to your service or not right now”?
And how many of you closed a contract with a customer you least expected?
This is when your luck happens, when you least expect it.
So, I’m going to invite you to let go of your expectations.
And hear me out before you block that idea. I worked in HR for 10 years, and it was my job to coach leaders and ensure they set expectations.
But here’s what I mean when I say let go of expectations.
Let’s keep with the sales example…I want you to set your goals or your quota for your team. Let’s say the goal or quota is to make or close 100,000K in contracts a quarter. Set that intention, but let go of HOW that manifests or shows up because there are a hundred million ways to reach that goal!
Depending on how many services or products which you’re offering, there are a number of ways to accomplish and achieve that quota.
As it relates to your lead generation, maybe you to a FB challenge, FB or google ads, Webinar, Networking or Industry events, Referral Groups, X amount of outbound emails or cold calls, organic traffic through social media or podcasting, paid partnerships…
Do you see where I’m going with this.
So hold your intention, the goal you’ve set, but let go of HOW you achieve that goal because it’s an experiment. Commit to a process that you want to try, but don’t be attached to it because it may not work out….We don’t have complete control on how we achieve the result. The HOW may look different then we expected.
For example, If I commit to do 150 outbound emails/calls a week in attempts of achieving my quota…and by the end of the quarter I fall short.
I have a choice, I can be disappointed, frustrated, I can say this quota is not achievable.
Or I can let go of how I expected that 150 outbound email or call strategy was going to work out…
get curious, and ask myself what worked with that strategy, what didn't, what do I want to try differently next time.
And who knows, maybe what didn't work, my failures are the learnings I needed to to effectively pivot and successfully double my quota for the next quarter!
So I invite you to set your intentions, commit to a process on how you to achieve your goal, and then let go of your attachment to the outcome….you’ll find yourself swimming in a pool of your luck and success because you’re more curious, willing to try new things, adaptable, and resilient.
#3 Blocker 3. Judgements block your luck.
Most of us are tuned into the itty-bitty shitty committee that lives inside of our heads, the choir that says, you’re not enough, you’re not smart enough, all the judgments we make about ourselves and the judgments we make about other people.
The best way to increase your luck is to weed out all the trash in your head so your beautiful brain garden or forest can really thrive. Your intentions, your goals and dreams, those are the seeds of intentions that we want to plant. But if your garden is full of expectations and judgments, there’s no room for our intentions to grow.
So, when we weed the garden of expectations and judgments, when we’ve got a clear mind and an open heart, we’re more connected to ourselves and others, we’re able to access our intuition, those new creative ideas and downloads on how to achieve our goals, and we’re open to receive more luck and abundance.
For context on this committee in your head, these gremlins started to form when you were a child to help protect you. They took on the voices of well meaning, and maybe not so well meaning parents, teachers, peers, society.
For example, maybe your mom said, shhh, sweetie, your hurting my ears when you sing that song, can you mouth the words?
Or after your teacher saw your finger painted picasso drawing, they said, sweetie, you're not an artist, stick to sports
Or after you walked into class feeling super hip and cool with your purple poka pants, the kid in the corner yelled across the room, those pants are ugly and you look stupid..Over time these lettle gremlins started to form, got bigger, and began to multiple and become your sub personas.
They’re the voice that said don’t you dare sing that song out loud, you mouth the words in your head. They are the voice that says put that pain brush down, you’re not a painter, you play sports, remember?
They’re the voice that say, dont you dare put on those poka dot pants, put on the blue ones instead.
They are the voices the sub personas you started to identify with, and you forgot the truth of who you really are.
And the truth of who you are, who we all are is consciousness, we are the spirit, the soul, the pure light and love that doesn’t have expectations, and is fully expressive and knows its creative and is capable of anything.
One of the best ways to let go of judgments is to become aware you have them. Try going through the week and seeing which judge is loudest…
Is it your inner critic? The voice that tells you’re doing it wrong, you’re not good enough? The one that says if you’re not careful, you’re going to hell in a handbasket?
Or is it the critic that judges others? The part that makes negative assessments of other people, thinks someone is getting too full of themselves, being too self centered, too extravagant? Sound familiar?
Or is it the judgments from others consume you? Sometimes outside criticism may even echo your own inner critic, but two criticisms don't make a truth!
Your goal is to become aware of who’s talking. And you’ll know when one of these judges are talking because you feel frustrated or anxious by the conversation they’re having in your head.
Once you become aware that one of these gremlins are talking, you will have become the observer of thought rather than being consumed by thought. And when you’re the observer of thought or your judgments, then you have the power to say i’m not going to listen to this fellow…
Hey little gremlin, get outta here.
And when you start to let go of judgments, you’ll start to connect to more opportunities and more possibilities because your judgements are blocking you from receiving them!
#4 Now your fourth blocker of luck is time traveling
When you’re traveling to past regrets or future worries, you’re stuck.
You’re stuck in emotions like blame, shame, guilt, or fear or self doubt.
But when you’re in the present moment, fully here, now, with no expectations and no judgements, taking in what is directly in front of you, all of a sudden you’re awake, conscious, able to see and receive the luck that has been right in front of you the whole time!
All of this really about noticing when you have expectations, letting them go and coming back to center.
Noticing, oh, I’m having a judgment, letting it go and coming back to center.
Noticing, oh, I’m worrying about the future, or regretting about the past again, I have a choice…I can stay there, or let it go and come back to the center.
The goal is to keep coming home to peace, because when we’re in peace, when we’re not having expectations or judgments, not worrying about the future or past regrets, when we’re in the present moment, connected in peace, all of a sudden, our creativity comes forth on how to navigate forward, around the brick wall of frustration, opening ourselves up to more luck!
Great practices you can do on a daily basis to help you become more aware of your expectations, judgements, travels to past regrets or future worries, and let them go is meditation, reflective writing, you can practice eliminating multitasking and focusing on one thing at a time, or being completely present with your five senses.
That one is my faovirate practice. I’ve been going on walks without my headphones, without a neighbord, and without my dog, and just taking in the wind and the sun on my skin, taking in the scenery, and taking in the sound of the birds chirping. It’s been so interesting because as I’ve been practicing being very mindful and present in my walks, it feels like someone has raised the volume on nature. The sound of the leaves flying around or falling on ground, or the birds is a soundtrack I used to miss, which I now thoroughly enjoy!
One thing I have to share about this luck with you is I have a client that just finished our 8 week Stanford University Self Discovery course together. She originally came to me looking for clarity on a career that aligns with her purpose. She was eager to jump ship.
But after 8 weeks, the feeling of leaving her job was no longer there, and she realized she was exactly where she was supposed to be for a reason. She now wakes up super excited to see what is in store for her in the day instead of focusing on what she doesn't have what what she is uncomfortable with. She recognizes she will get what she wanted from the beginning of her coaching process, but she doesn't feel pressured anymore. She trusts that she is very capable, she wont fail, and she has completely reframed her life in a way that his her connecting to a higher vibrational energy instead of a depression spiral.
The other day, she mentioned she was feeling so good, singing and dancing in her car…and she had a moment where she thought, wow, the last time she felt this amazing, guys used to hit on me all the time. And exactly after that thought completed, guy on the freeway speed up, signaled her to roll down her window, and said hey, I’d love to get your number…on the freeway!!
Now, this girl is married, but…this is the type of high vibration, feel good and lucky we’re talking about.
My mentor as an example shared she doesn’t do formal marketing for her coaching business. She as at the point in her business where she just gets calls and emails from people that want to work with her. She’s makes about a million dollars a year.
But more than that, she’ll have a thought about a person she wants to meet, or someone she wants to do business with, and she’ll either get a call or an email from the person she’ll run into someone that mentions that person’s name or knows that person, and she’ll get connected.
So, for you, task is to start doing more of what you love. Yes! Do the 3 Rs, do responsibilities, for a reward or for recognition, AND, I intentionally create space to do more of what you love.
And while you’re out in the world, navigating through life, in work, in your relationships, setting goals, and taking action to achieve them, you’re going to let go of your expectations, your judgments of yourself or others, you’re going to let go of past regrets, future worries, and bring yourself back to center, the here and now, which will open your awareness up to new possibilities and opportunities, and luck, that has been right in front of you the whole time!
Start unblocking yourself today, so you can get more into a state flow, coming across the right person, showing up at the right event, in the right situation, find yourself in a world of synchronicity, serendipity.
Alright, let’s recap what we reviewed in today’s episode…
